Matching New Hardwood Flooring To Existing Flooring

There are a number of approaches to matching new hardwood flooring to your existing hardwood flooring that needs spot replacement. Depending on how old your current floor is, you might be able to find perfectly matching flooring for sale, retail.  Particularly if your existing hardwood was prefinished. It’s as easy as ordering more of the same brand and style, then having it installed.

If your hardwood floor was site-finished and installed in just the past couple of years, you’ll probably have similar luck. Order more of the same boards matching species, grade, length, width and thickness. Then just use the same stain. Don’t be surprised that it may take a few months for the new areas to match seamlessly with the old. If you want perfectly matching hardwood flooring throughout your house, it’s worth the wait.

Or Don’t Try Matching It At All

If you cannot perfectly match new hardwood flooring to your existing hardwood flooring, you might want to go in a completely opposite direction. A contrasting hardwood floor can serve just as well. Particularly in cases where a transition is from room to room. Selecting a contrasting wood for the new flooring can create a dramatic new look if you carry the theme throughout your home.

We aren’t simply talking color contrast, either. You can go from narrow strips to wide planks; right angle squared off lines to a mosaic percale… There are contrasts which perfectly complement each other.

Or Completely Replace Your Existing Hardwood Flooring

Sometimes it’s wise to consider how attached you are to the existing hardwood flooring. If for instance you’re dealing with a relatively small space, or significant repairs are necessary, it might be smarter just to remove what you already have and start over. In certain circumstances, whole-floor projects can be more cost effective than trying to repair existing hardwood flooring then match it perfectly with new hardwood flooring.

Sometimes Close Enough Is Just Fine

If having perfectly uniform hardwood flooring throughout your home is important to you, Artisan Hardwood Floors can make that happen. However, when you understand that wood will experience variations because of age, color changes due to exposure, or even variations between trees within a species, an exact seamless match where the floors meet can be a very daunting task requiring all of our skills and experience. In those circumstances, a subtle trick can work wonders.

If the transition from the existing hardwood flooring to the new hardwood flooring meets in a hallway or similar area with a narrow entry, a throw rug can often serve to cover the seam and trick the eye into missing the difference.
